Justin Trudeau promises to help Canadians affected financially by the coronavirus outbreak

Justin Trudeau has promised a “significant fiscal package” to help Canadians who need to take time off amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday afternoon, the Prime Minister said that Canadians should not have to worry about their ability to pay rent, buy groceries, or pay for extra child care due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Trudeau said that the government would be rolling out measures in the coming days to “directly” help Canadians.

“We need to make sure Canadians have the option and ability to follow public health advice,” Trudeau said.

He added that the fund will primarily go toward “particularly vulnerable Canadians” including small businesses, who will “struggle through this period of economic slowdown.”

The Prime Minister’s announcement comes just days after he unveiled a $1 billion fund to help combat coronavirus by bolstering provincial healthcare and vaccine development.

Financial Minister Bill Morneau is expected to provide further information on the fiscal package during his press conference at 2 p.m. this afternoon.
