If you thought that secret agents and spies were only in movies, think again. In Canada, we have our own secret service agency, known as the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). In fact, the CSIS is currently hiring employees to fill several positions, and you’ll need a few specific qualifications.
In a Twitter post shared on July 6, Government of Canada Jobs indicated that the intelligence agency is looking for foreign language communications analysts.
At first glance, this job may sound a little boring, but it’s actually a lot more intriguing than it sounds.
To apply for this position, candidates must be fluent in one of the following five languages: Arabic, Farsi, Mandarin, Russian or Punjabi.
The foreign language communications analyst is called upon to read or listen to information in foreign languages, […] translate it and produce interim reports based on the value of the information obtained.
In other words, if you’re the type of person who listens to the conversations at nearby tables in a restaurant, this position will probably interest you!
The job offer mentions that candidates must be highly motivated, have a strong sense of initiative and be able to exercise a lot of discretion.
In terms of qualifications, you’ll need an undergraduate degree and at least two years of research, analysis and report-writing experience.
According to the CSIS, those selected will also have to pass a written test, that will assess your “command of a foreign language as well as French or English.”
It’s worth noting that the secret service hiring process is quite complex and it must be kept confidential.
“It is important not to discuss your job application (including on social media), except to your spouse or close family members,” explains the service.
If you’re wondering if it’s all worth it, the salary ranges from $69,350 to $84,360.
